The Greek word ‘phantasia’—meaning a vision or hallucination—is the origin of words like FANTASY and PHANTOM. In Latin, that root inspired a verb, ‘pantasiare’, that was used to mean to struggle to breathe while having a nightmare—and via French, ultimately gave us the word PANT.

Adopted into English from French in the 1200s, the word ABANDON was originally a two-word phrase, ‘à bandon’, essentially meaning ‘at will’, or ‘at discretion’. In that sense, it was originally an adverb, with the verb not recorded in English until around 200 years later.
