🎣How do marine heatwaves affect fish vital for recreational & commercial use?
A collaborative study led by Faculty of Sciences, Engineering and Technology is running experiments in the SIMS to understand this. Focusing on Yellowfin Bream & Sand Whiting, the project examines their responses to heatwave conditions.

Sharing a new publication fresh off the press!

The study by Caley et al. is based on 2022 experiments at our facilities, and investigates how artificial light at night (ALAN) and warming affect sea urchin grazing on kelp. 🌱 💡

PhD candidate Chris Cooney (USYD) studies Pocillopora aliciae's mixotrophic feeding strategy in changing climates. At SIMS, he explores coral adaptation between photosynthesis & particle capture using isotope analysis. He's also looking at 3D mapping, & settlement studies. 🪸

Fun fact: Seahorses don’t have a stomach, so they need to eat constantly.

Now that’s a marathon swim! Diaz the long-nosed fur seal has travelled 6,000km since being released late last year. She’s the fifth seal to be released as part of the Seabirds to Seascapes Project with @sydneymarine, Taronga Zoo and NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service 💙

Our latest Narooma line servicing revealed 6,960 new detections of sharks, rays, & fish! This amounts to 69,949 detections recorded in the region since 2012.

Exciting update from the Dumont Seal Team! As the expedition wraps, we're excited to hear that 9 CTD tags have been deployed on 7 male & 2 female Weddell seals. They're now back in the ocean, sending vital data.

Stay tuned for the insights they bring as the sea ice reforms. 🦭

This Sydney Institute of Marine Science programme brings together multiple ecosystem restoration initiatives to provide a template for restoration of whole seascapes in urbanized areas across the globe to maximise ecological but also socio-economic benefits.
