Always the first warbler on the scene. Exciting to see the return of the butterbutts (yellow-rumped warblers)! Welcome back, friends

A couple of pics to help share my experience of visiting Last Mountain Lake National Wildlife Area on the weekend. Lots of swans and so many ducks! (zoom in and see who you can see)

You never know who you'll meet when you visit a storm water retention pond. Hooded mergansers! Such tiny, fancy ducks

Dowitchers? It's early for them but pretty sure that's them. They were doing the sewing machine thing. No idea if long or short-billed but apparently that's an impossible distinction, so...

What a day! Just got back from a day at Last Mountain Lake, Canada's first wild bird sanctuary (est. 1887). I lost count of meadowlarks, tundra swans and pelicans. And the DUCKS. 45 bird species plus snake and toad and coyote. The weather was pretty nice, too

A duck tale in four parts:
1. Mallard pair lands on a pond and Mr. Mallard is surprised to find it solid
2. Dr. Mallard had better luck and splashed down in an open spot
3. Mr. considers his options, finds a spot and...
4. Ice-breaking is underway (look at his curly tail)
🦆😁

Grassland birds are plummeting because their habitat is disappearing at a catastrophic rate. The rules of the game need to change. Jointly published with the Central Grasslands Roadmap, Birds Canada's new Policy Scan shows which rules need to change and why.
