Always surprises me how empire and its legacy are rarely brought up when this topic is discussed. Ofc the impact of empire on state provisions in the 90s compared to now is very minimal- but it’s no coincidence that so much state expansion occurred in the early-mid 20th century

They’re old enough to actually feel the relative decline in people’s prospects and outcomes- they’ve been fundamentalised by it
