Actually to be more specific: is there a costume drama quite as beautiful and satisfying as the 1995 Roger Michell Persuasion? Or just a really charming comedy like Frances Ha? Or a story as gripping as The Lives of Others?
It has to be great. Only one night off!

More grim news for culture in Bristol. We set this festival up as a one-off for the cinema centenary in 1995. We wanted something that reflected Bristol’s strengths in short film and animation. Encounters then grew and grew. We feel the pain. bristol247.com/culture/film/e…

We’ve had a lot of island lit in the last few years - think windswept landscapes, homespun clothes, taciturn fisherman and craven visitors.

Could Elizabeth O’Connor’s Whale Fall, bought in a 10-way auction, feel fresh and live up to the hype? My review:

It’s really gratifying to see writers we’ve been excited about get the acknowledgment they deserve from literary prizes, most recently Colin Barrett, Noreen Masud, Isabella Hammad, Tom Crewe, V.V. (Sugi) Ganeshananthan and Claire Kilroy. Congratulations!

By the way Home Office all members of Afghan youth orchestra happily returned to Portugal after their tour of UK despite your fears they would try to stay here

My book - Maurice and Maralyn - is cheap today! It’s the true story of two wildly different people, their particular love, their whole lives, with a shipwreck in the middle… I’m proud of it! And you can now own it for a smallish amount of cash

A very strong and varied list.

I’m so thrilled for Claire Kilroy, Anne Enright, Isabella Hammad and V.V. Ganeshananthan. We championed all of their novels in the Sunday Times last year. I look forward to reading Restless Dolly Maunder and River East, River West.

My ten-year-old son has slightly lost interest in his piano lessons (he has never done grades but enjoys musical exercises and has really wide-ranging tastes). What are your best tips to inspire kids of his age? From concerts to games etc…
