Over 40 years of research, I learned #30: if a colleague or collaborator upsets you, first give them the benefit of the doubt; often, it is a result of a mistake or misunderstanding. Second, speak to the person directly - face-to-face, on the phone, or by video. Avoid email!

Over 40 years of research, I learned #28: reading and reflection are vital in order to retain creativity in research. If neglected, it is all too easy to simply do the next thing.

Marvellous example of what can be achieved by international cooperation and the integration of molecular science with epidemiology. Congratulations to Paul Brennan IARC Wellcome Sanger Institute Cancer Research UK and all those collaborators willing to share samples. nature.com/articles/s4158…

And thanks to the brilliant Cancer Grand Challenges team at CRUK for their total support since Mutographs started, as well as wonderful scientific journey with Wellcome Sanger Institute and UC San Diego colleagues (esp Sarah Moody), partners in the 11 countries, and all the great team IARC.

Over 40 years of research, I learned #29: always look at raw data generated by people you are supervising and ensure you understand in detail the value and limitations of the methods being used. Becoming detached from either will lead to errors.

Over 40 years of research, I learned #27: research is never done, so it's vitally important to plan for rest. Thanks to my PhD supervisor, Roy Saffhill, who advised me, 'When you simply haven't time for a holiday, you need to take a holiday.' Rest improves research.

Over 40 years of research, I learned #26: as well as professional audiences, it's important to be able to explain your research to non-specialists, including friends and family (40 years ago, on seeing my 1st paper, my dad said: I don't understand a word, but well done!).

Over 40 years of research, I learned #25: for biomedical scientists, contact with patients is important in order to witness the impact of disease. Perhaps visit wards with clinical coll.; volunteer in hospitals or hospices; participate in patient advocacy grps. Remain attached.

Over 40 years of research, I learned #24: research funding is increasingly concentrated in those institutes with a prior track record of obtaining funds. Early career scientists should look carefully at the institute and supervisor funding histories when deciding where to work.

Over 40 years of research, I learned #23: it is important to know when to end a line of research that is unlikely to bear fruit or to bear further significant fruit. It takes courage to stop something you have been invested in for a long time.

Over 40 years of research, I learned #22: if you are enthusiastic, spotting new research collaborations easily, there is a risk of becoming too dissipated, having too many projects at once. Knowing when to say no to a new opportunity is as important as knowing when to say yes.

Over 40 years of research, I learned #21: need opportunities to prepare and be named on grant applications. Sometimes, institute regulations can work against this goal. We need to be flexible, finding ways to meet this core training need.
