Today marks my last day at BBC News Africa after six incredible years. My time at the Beebs has been nothing short of adventurous and filled with growth. I will always cherish every moment spent there.
Last week was a thrill. I attended the #CleanAirForum in Nairobi as an UrbanBetter.science delegate. 35 countries were represented, and one thing that kept ringing through the room was: COLLABORATION and ACTION.
It’s stories like this that remind us why we must humanise data. It’s not just numbers on a screen. It’s a tool for action, engagement, and change. There were many more stories, including one by Waziri Mainasara Abubakar, on how UrbanBetter.science uses data to give communities the agency to speak up,
self-advocate, and demand change, both from themselves and from the government. And then came one of the most jarring moments for me: during a session and a chat I had with UN Environment Programme ’s Soraya Smaoun, I learned that only 1% of development funding goes to air quality projects.
A crisis linked to 7 million premature deaths each year, according to World Health Organization (WHO). The conversations at the forum weren’t just ambitious. They were grounded, necessary, and urgent. And the message is clear… Our work is cut out for us. Hewa Yetu, Sauti Yetu. (Our air, our voice.)
