Today I am struggling with all basic concepts, so - is there a standard Ian Watt-style history of nonfiction? (C18th and 19th British, really) Looking for something that covers basic forms, but also how 'nonfiction' as a category came to exist at all. I'm just very confused.

Reading about future eclipses, I learn that on 29/03/25 'some cities in Scotland will experience more than 40% obscuration of the sun'... [I did try to see the partial eclipse that was in Aberdeen for two minutes this evening, but couldn't find where the sun was supposed to be.]

Watched both Boys State and Girls State for the first time this weekend and, taken together, they're basically my favourite film about America now. I really, really loved these films, and reacted to them more emotionally than anything else in 2024, honestly.

Today I read Aberdeen graduate (and friend of both Nan Shepherd and the Woolfs) Lyn Irvine’s Field with Geese, which begins and ends with Simone Weil, and it was utterly charming. I’d take it over The Peregrine any day.
