I am starting to suspect that the last few days will be used to justify an expansion of knife laws and/or police stop and search powers.

Police conducting probably millions of unlawful searches?

One solution is to make them no longer unlawful.

Never mind that these searches show a racist bias wherever they are incentivised (be it here or the UK).

The ABC, despite the decent reporting linked above, scrambles to emphasise that the teenager responsible for last night's attack was on a good behaviour bond for possession of a knife.

The implication taken by many is that harsher treatment would've prevented what happened.

hpstorian 🇵🇸 I can imagine the hacks now, drafting proposals for legislation for mandatory custodial sentences for any offence involving a knife, 'watered down' to ankle monitors and daily reporting for under 18s in what is later described a victory for progressive compromise 🤮
