Aha, its these options in preferences -> Animation. Turn them all on, now when I select the blendshape sop, I see all my channels. Ahhhhh. Lets never speak of this again.

6 month old iPad pro next to 6 year old iPad Mini, both run the same model in Nomad happily.

If you follow a deep link on the wiki like tokeru.com/cgwiki/Houdini… , it should go directly to the right place and not start scrolling away as the images load in. Has bugged me for ages! Thanks to Divyansh Singh for the pointers, and Ulf Schneider for his markdown-it-fitmedia plugin.
