Sorry to be morbid on main, but have been thinking a bit recently about a book will: has anyone else done that? I mean they could just end up going to some dealer, but I’m sure I could think of some perfect recipients - also for instance all my Sebalds & Kafka’s!

For no reason in particular: a huge percentage of the best books I've read the last few years were either edited and published or written by Danielle Dutton. Do yourself the privilege of reading her newest, Prairie, Dresses, Art, Other.

A favourite anecdote about writers who started late in life: when Robertson Davies was asked why he waited until his fifties to start writing he said, 'People finally died'

'Our trip to Glenrowan also showcased our different approaches: Emily had places to see and I had a nostalgic salad roll to find.' Love this by Nova Weetman on her research trip with @emilygale in search of Ned Kelly's sister, Kate open.substack.com/pub/emilygale/…

“However, there’s something in me that doesn’t want to take the slightest risk in detracting from anyone’s experience of reading this book. That’s not because it’s surprising in a twisty…kind of way. Rather, it’s because this book is an empathy machine” oddandspecial.wordpress.com/2024/04/03/aud…

I am furious and horrified that Emory called the police on our students and faculty who have been tear gassed, shot at with rubber bullets, and arrested. In English, we have had faculty and students arrested. I am outraged.

Finished

…my own ‘problem’ with space and clutter, as I know you like to think of the way I'm unable to stop myself filling the rooms where we live…my inability to sort, to cull, to ‘prioritise’, as you call it, even with important things.

Shortly after meeting my mother, my father buggered off to a remote subantarctic island for a year to work at its weather station (go figure!). He would monitor his barometer several times a day for the rest of his life. Now I’ve started to do the same, using his old barometer!

'Zionism is a false idol that has betrayed every Jewish value...including the love we have as a people for text and for education...' is a particularly poignant note here

Excellent must-read piece by Robert Reich, a former US secretary of labor, who is a professor of public policy at the University of California, Berkeley, and the author of Saving Capitalism: For the Many, Not the Few and The Common Good.

'Can we be clear about a few things?…

“Thankfully, turning a profit isn’t the point of making art. Staving off existential dread is the point of making art.” @heralindsaybird with some excellent advice thespinoff.co.nz/society/25-04-…
