Traditionally, the patent theatres went dark for Passion Week each year, staging no performances in the week leading up to Easter Sunday. The accompanying loss in receipts was no doubt factored in by management, but some non-performing staff still had to be paid.

In this account book entry from 1797, it seems that a lifetime's admission to Covent Garden Theatre could be bought for "only" £50! A good deal, unless the customer looked a little sickly....

Gorgeous playbill for Hamlet written by Shakespeare, reworked by R. B. Sheridan, to be staged at Covent Garden 249 years ago (1775). The pantomime afterpiece meant the widest range of audience tastes were catered for on the night - a smart move by theatre management.
