I'm not going to refute all the logical fallacies in the Doug Lemov manifesto on book reading. There are too many. What I will say is that any teacher with half a brain understands the importance of structured choice and varied reading experiences. Nuance matters.

Prohibiting slang is ironically (and to any thinking person, *obviously*) anti-academic. Language is cool, it evolves, and it includes slang.

Also, pick your battles.

(The fight isn’t slang, it’s language that makes the classroom less safe.)

In this case, standardized tests were measuring to what extent kids had access to adequate healthcare or not.

So what other non-school factors do we need to consider in the subsequent conversation about school-based solutions whenever test scores are used?

I don't see how withholding learning experiences builds stronger readers. Children deserve a well-rounded education

Hello, education colleagues! I'm curious about something. Will you take 3-5 minutes to respond to this Very Unscientific Survey™️?

If you don't have the time and/or capacity right now, a share would be most appreciated.😌TY!

Andrea People outside of education (and some in it) embrace quantitative data as supreme. Teachers know that we live in a qualitative world. We work with people, not products.

Given the highly situational nature of teaching & learning it’s always telling when outsiders demand “clear answers” to education questions. Teachers know how to live in the nuance- believe us when we say “it depends” and stop weaponizing complexity as a means of wresting control

These two paragraphs from Mark Seidenberg sum it up perfectly:

We cannot improve instruction without considering all learners

After two intense days of testing I spent the last period of the day rearranging the room with my students. With a new PBL launching on Monday I figured we needed a change. They’re excited. We only have one room but how we use our space matters a lot.

It's a privilege to be able to navigate the educational system as a parent. Blaming parents for 'allowing' their children to take tests glosses over socioeconomic, linguistic & cultural factors + ignores systemic factors that created the testing dilemma in the first place.

There is nothing deficient about my students or the way they take tests. They are thoughtful, methodical, and utilize a variety of strategies to both read and answer questions. The tests take long because they ARE LONG.
