The young widow says a chance meeting changed her life. “I met a madam at the anganwadi who said try out the Sakhi centre and learn whatever you want.” The centre – a not-for-profit initiative – was a place where young women could learn marketable skills.

As a result, migrating in search of work has been a way of life for generations of Bind people. “Our home state Bihar does not have enough for securing an income. Sand mining is the only industry here…and all of Bihar cannot be reliant on that.”

And like that, the stunning dulis are born just around the time the paddy crop is ready to harvest - in October. He says there are only few livelihood opportunities in Bihar for Bind people, listed as an Extremely Backward Caste in the Indian Constitution.
