Random breath testing came in in 2008 after a concerted campaign from publicans and drinks manufacturers against itfor over 6 years &- remember the 'designated driver' nonsense in the mid-naughties.

The drink industry's 'charity' Drinkaware was formed in that period.

After the PHE conference post-launch, there are attempts by PHE to retroactively change the DrinkAware website to counter criticisms. This occurs in relation to the lack of information on policy best buys (a common feature of industry-funded alcohol information organisations)

At the same time, DrinkAware is at pains not to be seen to be pulled up on this, or for it to be seen publicly to come from PHE, but from DrinkAware itself.

Sadly, in spite of the abundance of such evidence, lessons do not appear to have been learned, as the first oral evidence session by UK HSC for a prevention strategy for alcohol included DrinkAware, the Portman Group and British Beer and Pub Association. bmj.com/content/bmj/38…
