Two coccidioides fungi species which cause valley fever are commonly found in soil in specific regions like California, Arizona and… see map below.

The fungi's spores can be stirred into the air by anything that disrupts the soil, such as farming, construction and wind.

Got some fresh air and played putt-putt this evening after work 😎 and couldn’t help but think about our endemic fungus, Coccidioides! Such an interesting fungus, and it seems really challenging to diagnose! So much to learn so just started with a brief overview! #q24MedMoment

Not sure if this is Coccidioides (could be its lookalike Malbranchia) but its never a good feeling to see alternating arthroconidia on your fungal slide. Gonna have to send this one off to rule it out. #mycology #clinmicro #medicallaboratory #fungus
