Smoking causes intervertebral disc degeneration by 
1️⃣ Death of cartilage end plate (CEP) cells 
2️⃣ Destruction of type II collagen
3️⃣ Destruction of proteoglycans

Occurs in smokers AND passive smokers
 
Stopping smoking does NOT cause disc regeneration.

Well... it's official! My K01 was awarded by the NIDDK. Resubmitting during the pandemic was complicated but with the support of my family, friends, and mentors, we did it 😅
