A fun side effect of the rapid graphical advances back in the day, any 2D game getting reviewed in mags from around 1995-2000 was derided as having bad graphics. (some) reviewers HATED symphony of the night because it was 'ugly' and '16 bit.'
When I say there's a graphics plateau now, this is what I am referring to. There are advances in lighting, reflection, physics, but in the 90s/early 2000s the jumps were DRAMATIC and a novice could see them. After about 2010 advances could really only be noticed by the hardcore.
