In many, many parts of the country, especially rural areas, local NPR stations are often the only source of reliable local news.

Also — the member stations and the stories they bring to/from the network are reflective of the diverse communities they serve.

Newsrooms run on trust. If you violate everyone’s trust by going to another outlet and shitting on your colleagues (while doing a bad job journalistically, for that matter), I don’t know how you do your job now.
