18 April 2016 saw the arrival on St Helena of the first large passenger jet, a British Airways by Comair Boeing 737-800. The flight was part of the tests for the opening of the airport and the start of commercial flights.

Jamestown, St Helena was a pointless answer on a recent celebrity edition of the BBC's Pointless with Alexander Armstrong and Richard Osman. Contestants were asked to name a UK city the name of which fitted between Cardiff & London. Cities in overseas territories now count.

8 years ago on Sunday, 10 April 2016 St Helena joined the jet age. History made when Bombardier Challenger 300 jet landed. First jet to land on the island. It had flown in from Jo'burg via Namibia with a team from Air Safety Support International who were to inspect the airfield

“My, my. At Waterloo, Napoleon did surrender. And I have met my destiny in quite a similar way.” Not talking about Napoleon’s time on St Helena, but the opening lyrics to Abba’s “Waterloo” that 50 years ago won the Eurovision Song Contest in Brighton on 6 April 1974.

On St Helena the opening of the exhibition at the Musée de l’Armée was marked on 5 April with a reception in the newly refurbished Generals' Quarters in Longwood House, Napoleon's main home during his time on St Helena. A few familiar faces from the time.

6 April 2016 the 'Napoleon in St Helena' exhibition opened at Musée de l’Armée in Paris and ran to 24 July. It was a huge success with the public. The exhibition tied in with Napoleon’s arrival on island and the start of the countdown to 200th anniversary of death on 5 May 1821

A black lacquered snuff box that once belonged to Napoleon during his time on St Helena is coming up for auction on 18 April. twgaze.co.uk has placed an estimate of £1000-1500 on it. The box was presented by Madame Bertrand to a Lt. Haynes on 18 may 1821.

2 April 1861 Napoleon’s coffin was finally transferred to the chapel in Hôtel des Invalides in Paris and set up in a red porphyry sarcophagus where it can be viewed today when visiting Musée de l'Armée. This was 21 years after return of Napoleon’s body from St Helena to Paris.

8 years ago on 2 April 2016 Tim Wonnacott and his wife, Helen (an antiques expert in her own right) held St Helena’s own Antiques Roadshow / Bragain Hunt. Saints turned out in numbers in Jamestown and what was to last a couple of hours, expanded to cover the whole day.

Eight years ago, 1 April 2016, the Brazilians came calling on St Helena. To be precise a Brazilian Navy offshore patrol vessel, Araguari, that had been involved in exercises in the South Atlantic. A reception was held for the Captain and crew at The Briars.

Just nine months now until the starting gun fires for the Cape Town to St Helena Yacht Race on 26 December. Competitors have until 1 November to enter the challenging 1,700 nautical mile (3,060km) journey across the South Atlantic.
