Increasing funding to #GradStudents and #Postdocs is the most urgent funding issue in Canada-they haven't had a raise in 20 yrs! I am so disappointed in Chrystia Freeland Justin Trudeau & François-Philippe Champagne (FPC) 🇨🇦 - #Budget2023 contains nothing to support these researchers #SupportOurScience 1/3

If it were a separate country, the #GreatLakes basin would be the third largest #economy in the world and freshwater is its fuel. As #climatechange makes #water scarce, people will seek refuge in the basin. Time is ticking - we must plan & prepare. #SciencePlan

Congrats to Dr EE Millar on his interdisciplinary PhD Faculty of Science TMU Environmental Applied Science & Management on why aquatic citizen science's move to platforms could lead to mistrust and industry control. 1st PhD to graduate from spatioeco lab & envirogeog. Marvelous job! tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…

'Could lead to' is the key phrase. Platforms (e.g. Twitter, Facebook) are great for getting large amounts of information into standardised, interoperable formats, and spreading info.

Google and Facebook will be blocking all Canadian news - even in Google searches. HOW LONG BEFORE THEY BLOCK YOU??? platforms are assuming the role of purveyors. Read Mario Ressa to understand why we should all be VERY worried.

Congrats EE Millar on publishing about the implications of using 'free' or 'easy to use' platforms for aquatic citizen science. It's important to prevent data commodification. Download full article before Nov 13 here: authors.elsevier.com/c/1hpKL3pILd~mk. Glad to be a part of this!
