Everybody has an accent. Nobody actually speaks the “standard”. What everybody thinks is standard turns out to be the accent of where they’re from. Research linguists have shown this by providing people with blank maps and asking them to label the dialect regions in the map.

Happy International Mother Language Day! Here's a map showing the minority languages of eastern Tibet. About half of these are spoken by Tibetans, half by other ethnic groups.

Excited that the first study on the #languages of the Luren in Southwest China has been published in "Cahiers de Linguistique Asie Orientale". We show that the Luren (now classified as #Manchu) formerly spoke two different languages, one #Sinitic and the other an isolate. (1/5)
