Great interview here with the founder of the California Forever project in Solano County. I'm excited by the ambition of this!

california's $10 billion+ high-speed rail boondoggle is not a good reason to abandon the concept of high-speed rail. it is a good reason to put a lot of people in prison for fraud.

Awesome philanthropy:
Before Andrew Carnegie, most libraries were not free, usually they were part of private clubs.

Carnegie donated $1.5B (in today's dollars) to build 2500 libraries; cities provided land, paid for books & were required to keep them free.

Bank of America $BAC: “This quarter, Zelle transactions have passed the combined number of checks written, plus the amount of cash withdrawals from tellers and from ATMs.” Who would have thought this ever happens?!

'Most comments were along the lines of “kids learning math fast sounds great, actually,” “curing cancer seems good,” or “advancing human achievement is a worthy mission.” A more self-aware person might have heard this criticism and deleted the tweets.'

In most countries, you observe a lot abandoned unfinished buildings. In the US, you virtually never do. I'd never thought about this as a physical manifestation of the US's highly developed credit sector. economist.com/middle-east-an….

@Zipline just made its 1,000,000th autonomous delivery to a customer. 10 years ago experts told me drone delivery wasn't possible, would never be allowed anywhere, and no one would ever pay for it. Turns out it is possible and people love it.

Violent crime is falling fast.

Climate change is looking a bit less dire.

U.S. incomes are growing fast.

Millennials and Gen Z are doing better than their parents did.

Wage inequality is falling.

Time to let ourselves be a little optimistic!!

Very well made argument. Risks of open source are way lower than risks of any one powerful actor owning the most capable model
