Since the arrests, SUNY New Paltz students have been unable to recover their personal belongings, including laptops. One was told that everything was bulldozed. When they tried to access dumpsters with remnants, cops told them it was none of their business!

Campus protests have been historic sites of moral clarity, and we unequivocally stand with the brave students of SUNY New Paltz. Thursday night’s police violence serves as a reminder that those in power rarely stand on the right side of history.

On Wednesday, New Paltz students established a peaceful encampment to demand that SUNY New Paltz divest from the genocide in Gaza. Barely a day later, the University responded with brutal police repression.

Following last night's arrests and the dismantling of the encampment at SUNY New Paltz, students staged a walkout earlier today.

It was horrific. The students took the tents down like they were asked. It’s an open campus at a public university. I hang out in that quad all the time, the students are always there at all hours. An 83 year old professor is in the hospital.

On the SUNY New Paltz campus, a handful of students were peacefully protesting when dozens of cops showed up. They kept pressing the line, swinging batons and grabbing students from the protest. Eventually they chased students off campus.

150 officers showed up at SUNY New Paltz to violently dismantle a peaceful encampment of about 70 students. In the words of one student, “People are dying and everyone just wants it to stop.”

I call on the Governor to immediately de-escalate police response to peaceful protests
