I've seen a lot of the old 'Kill Bill 1 & 2 are two movies, so Tarantino's already made ten' nonsense popping up recently. Ignoring the fact it was one movie split into two for runtime reasons (this isn't good enough for the people making this argument) let's look at the facts.🧵

I'd expect the tenth movie to be something a bit more Oscar-baity than The Movie Critic, and the John Brown project definitely fits the bill. But let's see - one of the great things about Quentin is that he's frequently surprising. Whatever 10 is, I'll be first in line to see it.

Your Letterboxd list with ten entries is not a mea culpa, it’s evidence that you don’t fully grasp how filmmaking works. That’s okay, it’s not your job. It is his job, though – so let’s listen to him, respect his decision, and be grateful for the perfect filmography.

By setting an advance notice limit on his filmography, he's giving the Academy fair warning that if they want to acknowledge his impact on the industry, now's the time to do it while he's still working. Hitchcock didn't win Best Director from five nominations, QT's had three.

All of this said, the irony is, if he did count Kill Bill 1 & 2 as separate movies, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood would be the perfect way to end his directorial career. He's called it his best movie, it was a critical and commercial hit, and it literally has a fairytale ending!

Sam Ashurst And what an impact I still remember the first time I saw Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction so vividly. Jackie Brown remains my favourite but it’s such a great filmography.

To Tarantino, Kill Bill 1 & 2 forms one movie, not just because that’s how it was intended narratively, but in terms of time spent on set. They were filmed back to back (obviously, it was supposed to be one film), they had a first day, they had a last day, they had a wrap party.

I’m as disappointed as anyone that The Movie Critic isn’t happening (hopefully it’ll still be a book), but I’m still holding out hope for QT’s John Brown biopic – that’ll be the one that gets him his Best Director Oscar (which I believe is an under discussed retirement reason).

Sam Ashurst Dan. Just Dan. hope you don’t mind me asking but as a big fan of Lone Wolf and Cub films (who isn’t) do you know if it’s worth reading the manga?

When you make a film, it creates a very specific window. Memories, relationships, and lessons learned that are unique to that experience, with a marked beginning and end. I’m also pretty sure Tarantino has complicated feelings about that shoot, that fix it even further in time.

Kenny Sutcliffe Same here! I can remember exactly where I was sitting, who I was with, and what was around me for Pulp Fiction - literally like it was yesterday. Electrifying!
