3/ Now imagine parents of a potential spouse. Elders you hope will entrust you with their child. You’re not “buying” approval, no. You’re showing thoughtfulness, sincerity, and honouring their role. It’s adab, not performance.

4/ Allah says in the Qur'an: “The good deed and the bad deed are not equal. Repel [evil] with what is better; then the one between whom you and him is enmity will become as though he was a devoted friend.” Surah Fussilat (41:34) How much more so with those you're trying to love?

5/ Still, you cannot control how people react. Some may receive your gift warmly. Others may be suspicious. That’s fine. That’s not your burden. We are taught to think the best of people: "Avoid suspicion, for suspicion is the worst of false tales..." — [Bukhari & Muslim]

6/ You don’t gift because you're sure of a return. You gift because it reflects your intention to build a relationship that’s grounded in grace. It’s not bribery. It’s not desperation. It’s part of what makes us human and believers.

7/ Don’t let modern cynicism rob you of timeless adab. You’re not weak for showing care. You're not a fool for being thoughtful. A rose offered with sincerity is more powerful than a thousand empty words.

8/ Yes, impression matters. Especially in cultures (like ours in Nigeria) where family is a foundation. Sometimes, a jar of honey or a beautiful scarf can say: “I see you. I honour you. I hope to build something meaningful here.”

9/ A gift doesn’t need to be expensive. The Prophet accepted gifts as simple as milk, perfume, or cloth and he gave generously in return. What matters is niyyah (intention).

10/ So the next time you're considering: "Should I get something for them?" Ask yourself: “Would this small act reflect the kind of heart I want to carry into this family?” If yes, then Bismillah. Let it go with du'a.

11/ To those giving: Give sincerely. To those receiving: Receive graciously. To those still waiting: May Allah grant you love full of adab, ease, and sweetness.
