The Wire is shocked to hear of the sudden death of Steve Albini. Yesterday we were excited to announce the new issue of the magazine with a cover story on his group Shellac. Now it has become a memorial to Steve. We send our condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. RIP.

Steve Albini was a giant. Big Black great, but production (he never called it that) exceptional: Pixies, Nirvana, PJ Harvey, Manics... Nobody made drums sound so ARID. (Also, owned up to his younger self sometimes being a jerk, which is ultra-cool.) R.I.P.
