Day 2 of Shakespeare Association of America: looking forward to talks about ‘The Tempest’, a seminar on Shakespeare’s poems, the annual luncheon, and the annual trip to a scuzzy local gay bar, but devastated a scheduling clash means I can’t attend the seminar on ‘Renaissance Dick Jokes’.

Right, Day 1 of Shakespeare Association of America for me: registration, a couple of meetings, the New Variorum Shakespeare lunch, listening to some of Don Rodrigues seminar about Shakespeare and AI, and then collapsing into a wine glass at the annual reception. Here we go.

Always a delight to walk along this lovely street in central Cambridge. Two hundred years ago ago the whole area was a market garden, the Garden of Eden, supplying the colleges. Extraordinary street names - Elm Street, Eden Street, Orchard Street, and (best) Adam and Eve Street.

And he could be very funny — if nasty. When his friend Randolph Churchill had an op for a tumour which turned out to be benign, Waugh said it was typical of the pointlessness of modern science that it would operate on RC and extract the only benign thing about him.

Words that everyone in politics uses incorrectly.

1. “Fulsome” - if you say someone has given a “fulsome apology”, you are suggesting it was so over the top as to be insincere.
2. It’s not a podium, it’s a lectern, unless the Prime Minister has won an Olympic medal.
