Surely a lesser known relief held in the Torlonia Collection. The inscription has been restored and we see two women tending to poultry and other butchered animals.

Today, a visit to Philippi! Very different from my last visit in 2015, both in the site (upgraded facilities, no road through the middle, no access to acropolis and sanctuaries) and my own perspective after another decade of experience.

An inscribed golden ring found in the settlement at Aalen. The ring belonged to a child, the inscription reads CRESCAS, which translates as “may you grow”. A wish every parent still has for their kids today.

Portrait of a matrona ~ c. 40 BCE

This piece captures the realism that characterised Roman portraiture of the late republic. The identity of the woman is not known but it is intriguing as statues for women were considered rare in this period.

For today's an early 4th century AD mosaic, discovered in the basilica of Aquileia, depicting the fight between a rooster and a turtle, commonly interpreted as the representation of light/good (rooster) and darkness/evil (turtle).

I can see the acropolis of Philippi from where I'm staying for the next few days! Hopefully the storm rolling through this evening will be gone by tomorrow, which will be my day for visiting the site, which even from the outside looks a bit different than my visit in 2015.

The Villa of the Birds mosaic is something to behold. There are 33 individual birds represented, each with their own frame. Just stunning!
