I used to love reading The Spectator, especially for Nigella and Deborah Ross, and the well-written book reviews. Now it’s full of stinkers. Life’s way too short to read leering drivel and flumping, predictable sightings of the first perceived wokeries of the month.

There’s a Spanish version of “once bitten, twice shy” that translates to “he who was burnt by milk, sees a cow and cries.” Korean has “a person who was once bitten by a tortoise gets startled when they see a pot lid.” But the most succinct phrase is the Finnish “Siberia teaches”
