I never deserved such a brilliant, generous, principled colleague and friend as Alice. 'Fearless' gets tossed around a lot in journalism, but she is the embodiment of it, the kind of reporter I have always aspired to be, and the kind the world increasingly lacks. This is gutting.

Alongside a third of the staff, I was laid off from The Intercept today. I was the only staffer both reporting & editing on the environment beat.
