'Geologic time — specifically, atmospheric time and ocean time — is moving as fast, in some cases faster, than we are — faster than technology, faster than history. The world we thought we knew is changing under our feet because we changed it.'

I never deserved such a brilliant, generous, principled colleague and friend as Alice. 'Fearless' gets tossed around a lot in journalism, but she is the embodiment of it, the kind of reporter I have always aspired to be, and the kind the world increasingly lacks. This is gutting.

I was writing about layoffs and then my husband @petermaass got laid off by The Intercept and then I finished writing my piece about what we can do to save the media... jacobin.com/2024/02/us-med… Economic Hardship Reporting Project Cory Doctorow @[email protected] douglas rushkoff Jacobin

Alice was an absolute rock in our newsroom for nearly a decade. Incredibly versatile, experienced, always generating fresh angles. It was a privilege to work alongside her and losing her the way we did is beyond upsetting. The world needs more of what she does.

I've known José since his days in TI's fellowship program. Honestly, I can't say enough good things about him, both as a colleague and friend.

Diligent, dogged, compassionate — he's a reporter's reporter and a hell of a good person. Editors, you'd be a fool not to hire this kid.

The hardest part of getting laid off has been seeing my mentors get laid off too. Rashmee was the glue that held our newsroom together. She was everywhere at once. A patient, thoughtful, kind manager. Led TI’s singular coverage of the Hindu far-right & its ties to U.S. politics

My excellent adventure at The Intercept is over, I was among those laid off. What a ride! Wrote on huckster generals & genocide denialists (hello Stan McChrystal & Peter Handke), edited Jeremy Scahill & Masha Gessen, oversaw security for reporters in warzones. Give me a shout 😀

The Intercept laid off 16 of our colleagues today. There’s not much to say. TI cut the people who keep this place running and this is a devastating blow to our newsroom

Alongside a third of the staff, I was laid off from The Intercept today. I was the only staffer both reporting & editing on the environment beat.

TI was my dream job. I’m grateful to have done such meaningful work alongside whip-smart, passionate colleagues & friends.

A new trail camera video of a wild jaguar in southern Arizona has people wondering: Is this one of the cats we already know about or a new individual? Based on rosette analysis it’s a new cat. In this image, from top to bottom is Mystery Cat, Sombra and El Jefe.

Killer reporting by the greats Jimmy Tobias and Ryan Devereaux. An The Intercept investigation from ~4,000 pages of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service case files reveals that federal prosecutors rarely bring criminal charges under the ESA when it comes to grizzly bears. theintercept.com/2023/12/20/gri…

Settle in with a beverage for this one. It's a long, compelling piece by Ryan Devereaux & Jimmy Tobias for The Intercept on the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service & DOJ's enforcement of ESA violations.

“I’m smoking him.”

Revealing reporting on ESA violations that go unpunished by Jimmy Tobias and Ryan Devereaux for The Intercept 👏

With the Endangered Species Act turning 50, Jimmy Tobias and I decided to investigate how the historic law applies when one of the country's most iconic species, the grizzly bear, is killed.

We reviewed 4,000 pages of case files. The results were grim. theintercept.com/2023/12/20/gri…
