Today I found myself, for the first time in a long time, feeling intimidated – worried about the consequences for standing up for students and for Palestine. And then I got so angry that I was made to feel that way that it dissipated like a bad dream.

Reposting this thread in light of growing evidence that liberalism’s fate in our time is once again to forsake its own emancipatory promise, throw in its lot with order instead, containing the left and abetting the right openly or inadvertently.

The sheer distance between the reality as we witness it and the reality as the administrative and political class project it (thereby facilitating authoritarian crackdowns here and genocide there) is, I think, a major part of what makes this moment unbearable.

And yet, Sudanese civil society is completely inspiring. In all my years of working in almost every single post-uprising country context in the wider MENA region, I’ve never seen a population as politically literate and intellectually mature as the Sudanese people.

This war was always between two sides of the same coin. Actors with complete disregard for human life, civilian protection, and the sanctity of self-determination, freedom and basic rights. None of them are any kind of hero, only traumatising generations of Sudanese for years.

Videos surfacing from Sudan are indescribable. Like a horror movie, I don’t have an explanation for the depravity & barbarism, or policy recommendations. Dehumanisation on an unimaginable scale, trauma for all who’ve seen. Accountability sounds hollow, but can’t be given up on.

I cannot think of a funnier way to punish the most left-wing Columbia grads for protesting Israel than by blacklisting their most right-wing classmates from the jobs they most want.
