This week I passed 50,000 words on my manuscript on evangelicalism in California. I didn't know a project could become so personal, both enjoyable and challenging. And there are so many angles to consider!

I can see it in the eyes of young men. They are "suffering from depression and anxiety, feelings of insecurity and inadequacy, and are committing suicide at a rate four times that of young women." newsletter.oalannoble.com/p/the-male-you…

R. Mouw writes about a Silicon Valley investor who in his free time reads medieval works: “it has to do with the speed of life when you are constantly involved with start-ups. You lose a sense of being a self that has a history. I have to [work] at being connected to... the past”

I appreciate Daniel Silliman's response. Everyone gets it wrong sometimes. What stands out to me is the unending desire for novelty in the field of biblical studies. It's not exciting to the modern mind but often the traditional reading gets it right. 🫤 christianitytoday.com/2025/04/daniel…

A reoccurring theme emerging in my research has been the cultural & religious divergence (real & perceived) between SF (& Bay Area) and SoCal. From the early 1900s, Lyman Stewart of Biola hoped to help LA become be a conservative answer to SF & its influence on the West Coast.

I'm surprised by a level of naivety among students interested in high church. Yesterday one remarked that the Episcopal Church was "not liberal" because they "hold to the creeds." The idea that a tradition of creedalism has preserved classical theology in TEC might be misguided.

I'm grateful my high church brothers & sisters. I've learned much from them. I studied church history in part due to my love for the ancient & medieval church. But as a Baptist (& member of fairly liturgical baptist church) I appreciate Gavin Ortlund here youtube.com/watch?v=sU9wje…

The greatest cultural difference between California and other parts of the country (Midwest, South, for example) is not political views, nor religious affiliation, etc. The most notable difference is that people in California regularly open their windows on their homes.

One of the things I'm most looking forward to on vacation is a day Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. In 1903, Teddy Roosevelt spent a day in Santa Cruz, but I don't know if I can match his style.
