My piece about the Census Bureau’s questionable approach to race and ethnic measurement is no longer accessible on The Messenger (they’re apparently out of business). You can still access a version of the article at the afrolatin@ forum via the link below: afrolatinoforum.org/pensamientos-b…

I fear the continuity & integrity of race and ethnicity data in this country is at stake now more than ever. The codification schemes that will likely accompany the new combined question will have half the country classified as multiracial by 2050. Mestizaje has entered the chat.

To say that this “change is good for everyone” is irresponsible. The OMB even acknowledges in the federal register that more research needs to be done to understand Black Latino race reporting. They went forth with this question knowing it was problematic for Black people.

"2016 Westat study conducted...found that Afro-Puerto Ricans were less likely to select the black category in a combined question. Participants would have marked both Black and Latino if the question had not limited 'Puerto Rico' to an example only for the Latino category."

The new census measure is wild bc Black Latines been opposed forever. When I joined the afrolatin@ forum long ago the first item of duty was the census. Nancy Lopez in 2018 “wrote an essay entitled “The Census Bureau Keeps confusing race and ethnicity". race.unm.edu/what-is-street…

My latest The Boston Globe Boston Globe Opinion column: What’s in a US Census question? If it’s about race, a lot. The revisions raise important concerns and muddle the identity issue a lot more. bostonglobe.com/2024/04/01/opi…

By not separating #ethnicity from #race, systemic racism, especially within #Latino populations, is conveniently rendered invisible. #Census #censo #publicpolicy ##Afrodescendant #Afrodescendiente #DecenioAfro afrolatinocoalition.org/statement-on-n…
