I’m really feeling the loss of Newsnight. Leaves a huge gap in the TV schedules for reports that go into more depth than a news segment, without the long lead time and investment required for a full Panorama-style investigation.

The BBC management seem intent on inflicting further self-harm and vandalism on serious and investigative journalism. Sad to read this from Mark Urban particularly in a week when work by Newsnight investigative journalists have been central to major news stories this week.

Anyone else getting emails with links to articles for students about AI and assessment and what to do if you're accused of using AI. They ask you to read & share as you tweet about AI and HE. When you take a look you realise it's an essay mill!

There's a new press release from Turnitin making big claims about their AI detector. They've scanned over 200 million papers with it over the past year.

A 4% false positive rate, their current claim, means 8 million wrong results. That's a lot of harm.

I knew AI would be an issue so I made their formative coursework mandatory, saw one that was obviously AI, called him out in front of everyone at the next class and had him removed from the course. Haven’t had an issue since.

Interesting hearing Soweto Kinch talk about jazz being anti AI, the antidote to the algorithm when so much music feels like it’s been curated by invisible software. He also touched on authenticity & story telling.
