Portland's MAX lines slow to a crawl once they reach the city center, creating system-wide slowdowns. Adding downtown tunnels might be the only way to fix that in the long term.

A Union Pacific freight train derailed this morning at the east end of the Steel Bridge. While impacts appear to be minimal, the event called attention to the bridge's weaknesses as a transit hub—and to the risks of oil-by-rail transport in Portland.
