I bought my bridge camera in 2018 as an early retirement present to myself and before long I had the chance to properly test it in Thailand. This White-rumped Sharma was a lovely bird and that tail is quite something!!

Another from the archive today - drake Greater Scaup from Nemuro, Hokkaido, Japan in March 2023. The numbers of sea ducks around the coast and harbours of the island were quite phenomenal.

A very breezy morning at Kenfig Pool but a walk up the East Pool Shore produced my fifth Common Greenshank of the autumn which from memory is the most I have recorded in one year there. As usual, it was always flighty but I managed a couple of shots.

Just a little background, if you don’t know my work… #WhenBeastsSpoke is a collection of illustrated thoughts from the animal’s perspective. Contemplations on anything from self-love and gratitude, to observations on the little things and joys of nature. And I paint the animals.

Three Common Snipe were the pick of a rather quiet morning at Kenfig Pool. I didn't manage to get any photos so here is one at Hajnowka Meadow Pool, Podlasie, Poland from August 2020.

Watching the vast flocks of seaducks was one of the highlights of my trip to Japan last year. Stejneger's Scoter was the most wanted and I was thrilled to get really close views of this drake as almost all the others we saw were a lot more distant.

I'm starting to see a lot more mobile flocks of birds at Kenfig Pool now including Long-tailed Tits and various accompanying common warblers moving from bush to bush in fast moving groups.

Whistling Kite was a common bird in NT and Queensland with birds often seen near the sides of the roads like this one, presumably looking for an easy roadkill meal.

This stunning Pied Flycatcher was at Sker Farm this morning. It is a surprisingly scarce migrant at Kenfig NNR with this being the first I have seen away from Kenfig Pool in the recording area. Needless to say I was very pleased that it showed so well before the heavens opened!

Two-tailed Pasha time! Around these parts (Greece) Aug-Sep is a good period for finding the second generation of these beauties. It is surely the most exotic and non-European looking butterfly in Europe! #Leptember

Its been an excellent spring and autumn for Spotted Flycatchers at Kenfig NNR with another two seen this morning making it my best ever year for them on the reserve. Also a Garden Warbler, Whinchat and Black-tailed Godwit of note.

A blustery morning at Kenfig Pool produced two Ospreys, a Eurasian Hobby and a Black-tailed Godwit of note. Its the first multiple sighting I've had of Ospreys there - one unsuccessful dive and one chased off by gulls. Close overhead views as one flew over me, but grim light...

I've found a couple of White-winged Black Terns in the UK, but have never seen one in my home county of Glamorgan where it remains a very rare migrant. This bird was photographed in Zajki, Poland where they can sometimes be seen in large numbers depending on the water levels.
