A late decision to go to Whiteford paid off as cracking views of one of the Golden Orioles with another seen briefly in flight. The bird was pretty flighty this morning, but managed to pin it down by the bunkhouse in a sheltered spot. It was always a little obscured for pics

I saw my first Lesser Whitethroat of the year at Sker this morning and my first Sedge Warbler at Kenfig Pool as well as a very smart male Orange Tip. Pretty quiet otherwise.

I finally got to see my first butterfly of the year yesterday - a Brimstone at Kenfig Pool. I also heard my first Common Whitethroats but had to wait until today to see any with at least five singing birds noted. Photo from Hajnowka, Poland September 2021.

Big thank you to the volunteers today!
It was a mammoth effort to repair the hide quickly so not to disturb the nesting Great Crested Grebes
(Podiceps cristatus)

A Whimbrel in off the sea at Sker was new for the year, while helping to repair the hide at Kenfig Pool brought its rewards as a female Marsh Harrier appeared through the gloom and began quartering the west pool. Photo from the same site August 2019.

The modern day Passenger Pigeon yet still we live in a World where extinctions are the name of the game. The MALTESE government and judicial system are a disgrace. Numbers down 93% on 1970 populations - catastrophic. The Killing MUST STOP. One of the most iconic species in the W

My first Common Sandpiper of the year was hunkered down from the howling north west wind on the East Pool Shore at Kenfig Pool. A little ray of hope on a dark day for the reserve. Photo from July 2023

Crested Bellbird is a species of the arid interior of Australia. This bird was one of four seen in the vicinity of Hamilton Downs near Alice Springs though none showed a raised crest.

Heartbreaking. Aren’t you all sick of this sort of thing. We shout & scream & do petitions but there seem to be nothing we can do about it, the rich and those in power always win. People call me naive but what a world we could live in if everyone cared about each other and nature

I always look forward to the first Ladies Smock and Marsh Marigolds as signs that spring really is here at kenfig Pool. Its been difficult with lots of paths impassable due to lying water, but saw both today. Also Early Purple Orchid in flower.

I was lucky to see to see the American Golden Plover when it was found by Paul Stephens Paul Stephens, and even luckier yesterday to locate it when I had my camera with me. Light was very poor however and the pictures are large crops so not the best quality. Warden Kenfig National Nature Reserve

Surprisingly quiet for migrants at Kenfig Pool given the southerly breeze, but I did get some nice views of Bullfinches this morning with six seen in total. Drake Greater Scaup still present, six singing Blackcaps, 9 Willow Warblers & 14 Chiffchaffs.

A double duck day with the drake Ringed-necked Duck on Lisvane Reservoir and the drake Lesser Scaup that had relocated to Cardiff Bay, where there was also a lovely adult Little Gull which was a little distant for photos with Rhos Williams. Delighted to meet up with Duncan Dine too!

A couple of ropey record shots of the American Golden Plover at Sker this morning. Viewable distantly on the rocks in front of the flood but often hunkering down behind rocks. Hopefully better pics to come 🤞 A first for Glamorgan - congratulations to the finder Paul Stephens
