Thomas was probably buried at Arlington bc family couldn't afford to have his body shipped home.

It seems likely that this was the first time any family member had visited his grave.

Thank you Arlington National Cemetery for caring for his grave these 160 years.

I recently visited the grave of my great great granduncle, Thomas Rutledge, at Arlington National Cemetery. He was one of the first few hundred soldiers buried there, following his death after the Battle of Wilderness Virginia.

Shot May 6, died June 9 1864.
