Street sweeping day is a helpful visual reminder of how much public space we dedicate to “free” (taxpayer subsidized) car parking.

It’s especially impressive given that almost every property in my neighborhood also has parking in the alley.

To most commuters, the word “congestion” carries negative connotations, and is something to be avoided at all costs.

But to those that ride a bike, it doesn’t carry the same weight, being perhaps the only mode of transport where running into traffic makes it even more enjoyable.

Anne Hidalgo became Mayor of Paris 10-years ago. In that time the City has;

🚲 built 1,300km of bike lanes
🌳 planted 145,000 new trees
💨 reduced air pollution by 40%

Up to a third of morning motor traffic in many cities is parents dropping their kids off at school.

Shifting some of these trips to active modes by providing safer routes is likely the most economical, expedient and efficient way to reduce congestion—and improve quality of life.

Pop-up protected bike lanes, a willing city, and a school: A match made in heaven.

Pop-ups are a great way to find out if there's a latent demand* for youth cycling, like this one we did last week in the City of Hialeah (Miami, Florida).

*There usually is.

Venice Blvd was closed to cars today.

Everyone I met agrees we should do this every week.

Not only is cycling a more pleasant, safe, and green way to move LA’s humans, but it’s more efficient. Many more people moving through right now compared to Sunday’s normal traffic flow.

Fantastic quote. Casey is right.

Yet people regularly tell us that we're 'brave' to cycle in London. In a leafy residential neighbourhood.

My kids have been told so in a side road on the way to school - that's how oddly normalised road danger is.

“The main obstacle to cycling is not hills or the weather: it’s inequality. Equality and cycling are cause and effect.

The existence of cycleways reflects how egalitarian and democratic a society is, and high-quality infrastructure for cycling produces a more inclusive society.”

Eindhoven’s “Smile Factor” program leverages its status as a design capital and plentiful tunnels to offer artists a chance to work in their city.

Over 40 underpasses have been activated, including an homage to John Cleese’s “Silly Walk” sketch from Monty Python’s Flying Circus.
