'This book is only ostensibly about cars. It is not about banning their ownership or existence… A low-car city is a city open to humans. And I much prefer to talk about people than cars.'

Mother’s Day is Sunday, so I was card-shopping this morning and came across this turd.

Car dependence doesn’t just rob children of their independence, it also imposes massive physical, financial, and psychological costs on primary caregivers.

Was it really President Eisenhower's vision to run freeways straight through downtown Houston, Austin, Dallas, and so many other U.S. cities — and if it wasn't, why is it still happening to this day? @TheOverheadWire sits down with @MeganKimble to explore.

Ten years ago today, we put a name on our unpaid advocacy work and launched Modacity into the world.

It has resulted in two books, hundreds of speaking engagements, an intercontinental move and roles working for Dutch organizations.

Cheers to the next ten years of changemaking!

I think it’s past time to call it — Vancouver is no longer a leader among cities in new urban biking & active transportation infrastructure. It’s now joined the ranks of cities that made strong progress in the past, but at best has stalled & in fact is sadly now moving backwards.

This is a new low-income senior housing center going up in Kirkland. It's a shame that the only places we allow something like this sandwiched in between the freeway, a 5-lane road and a 6-lane road. Surely there are better places for our elderly to age in place.

About 30 percent of U.S. residents don’t have a driver’s license. So what will it take to factor them into our transportation decisions? We sat down with Anna Zivarts, who explores that question in her essential new book, 'When Driving Is Not An Option.' usa.streetsblog.org/2024/05/09/the…

Inspired by NYC’s Highline and Atlanta’s Beltline—and informed by a Dutch Cycling Embassy workshop—Miami’s Underline is more than an urban trail.

It’s a beautiful and accessible “third place” in the heart of the city; designed to create conviviality, community, and social connection.

For years, Ocean Drive was a popular place for drivers to cruise up and down the Miami Beach waterfront.

All of that changed with the pandemic, when a pilot scheme sparked a new vision for a human-scale promenade; opening a path to permanent pedestrianization in the near future.

With its Art Deco hotels, classic cars, and bustling terraces, Miami Beach’s Ocean Drive is one of the world’s most iconic thoroughfares.

In 2022, a road diet reduced car traffic to one direction, removed street parking on one side, and added a bidirectional protected bike lane.

There is something quite special about cycling through the car-free streets of Manhattan (and the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, and Staten Island).

The joy. The togetherness. The experience of taking back a piece of the city just for one day. Thanks @BikeNewYork for making it happen.
