Hello new followers! I wrote a book--Police and the Empire City--which explores how the New York City police department's encounters with race, immigration, and empire shaped how modern police use technology, recruit, do violence, and operate generally.

NYC folks: Please help spread the word about this event next week. Unfortunately, the lessons of police violence are all too clear right now in the city, but hoping for a good conversation in Brooklyn.

Telegram is notoriously insecure and routinely cooperates with govs behind the scenes while talking a big game about speech and privacy. Even their limited opt-in (roll their own) encryption is sus. The more you know 🌈

Using AI to turn body-camera videos into police reports is worrisome given that some AI have been shown to 'hallucinate' facts, or summarize events inaccurately, EFF’s @MGuariglia told Phoenix’s 12 News. 12news.com/article/tech/a…

In a breaking world, books are a labour of love. After 6 years, is (almost) here! It is a global story of border surveillance, where your body is your passport and matters of life and death are determined by algorithm.

I'm flying in a 737 today. If anything happens to me, one of you is responsible for finishing the book I've been researching/writing.

Stories like this are why I was grateful Dean Preston (deanpreston.bsky.social) called for a public hearing on how government money was being used to fund police propaganda campaigns. Money that could be helping people shouldn't go to shitposters with the legal right to kill.

I wrote about a new product that uses audio from police body cameras to write narrative reports.

Big difference in a report saying 'I said drop the gun' and 'the suspect was armed.' Interpretation matters. There's answers we need before this is deployed.

We've been warning for years that this massive surveillance machine 'intended' to do only overseas snooping was actually a massive tool of domestic spying. I feel like we're owed an apology from the people who renewed 702.

Grateful to John Pfaff, and now @johnpfaff.bsky.social for taking our term, 'Supercitizens' to describe the elevated legal and social privileges of police and bringing it to a wider audience...especially in light of new laws putting police even further above the law.

There are some street lights in Atlanta laden with so much surveillance equipment that I’m surprised they stay upright.
