I often reject tech analysis that centers free speech because of how it was used by tech libertarians to usher in the current dystopia. I think Meredith Whittaker does a good job bringing together political economy with the importance of free expression here: lpeproject.org/blog/social-me…

Ask yourself why reporters would need to be arrested for reporting on what's happening at UCLA? What dont they want the public to know? Asking as a UCLA alum class of 1996

Europe is maybe two months from passing laws that end private communication as we know it, and folks are looking the other way (understandably.) You’re not going to get a do-over once these laws are passed.

'Peaceful' ≠ 'lawful.' 'Forcing the cancellation of classes, trespassing, shutting down campuses' are all PEACEFUL.

Biden's willful conflation of peaceful w/ lawful is underwriting stunning brutality, & forging political weapons that will be wielded by others at our peril.

Anyone who cares about free speech & expression should be feeling cold blood in their veins as USG rushes to silence, censor, & brutalize those critical of Israel's extremist gov.

Bills like this are political weapons. Once forged, they will be wielded for much, much more.

Jeff Sharlet Dartmouth 🌲 Those cops were brutal to me. I promise I did absolutely nothing wrong. I was standing with a line of women faculty in the their 60s to 80s trying to protect our students. I have now been banned from the campus where I have taught for 34 years.

'What problem does this actually solve? The issue is not necessarily the tech, it’s how the structures that create it are shaped, the corporations and the governments that have the ability to determine who it serves and who it subjects' Meredith Whittaker on AI msnbc.com/msnbc-podcast/…

WATCH-- Chris Hayes: It's easier to argue about what college kids are doing than to confront the human misery and destruction that's happening in the actual conflict which is, of course, the source of these protests.

Was just telling my kids how at Princeton in the late 90s some students occupied the President’s office for weeks, and everyone treated it as totally mundane. At Bard where I grew up it happened all the time. Heard that Guidos office at YLS was occupied too.

I've written on political dissent & violent policing for 15 years, particularly in NYC. Compared to Tuesday night, I have never witnessed, at the scene of a protest, the use of police power so disproportionate to the type of demonstration taking place. theintercept.com/2024/05/01/nyc…
