does show how fame is fleeting? on Monday, it was all where's the moon, there's the moon, and the moon this and the moon that. But today, just one day later, you don't hear a peep about the moon. Not a word!(except for theological, liturgical reasons of course)

A day after we cite Walt Whitman poem that starts 'When I Heard the Learned astronomer/ when the columns, the figures, were ranged before me/ when I was shown the charts, the diagrams..'. You won't be surprised that he said in effect: Enough! let's see the eclipse!

On or , we wonder.
The total eclipse seen yesterday was a marvel because of how the moon seemed to fit so perfectly over the sun. But if the moon were bigger or the sun smaller we'd still have eclipses, right? More of 'em, too! But not so perfect.

After a hard night Katharine Hepburn has just stepped out into the bright sunshine of the next day ( in the Philadelphia Story on tv) Overcome, she throws up a hand to shield her eyes from the glare. Obviously she forgot her glasses. .

You know who may deserve credit for ? Whoever predicted weeks and months and years ago that it would happen today. Can anyone name any of those people? Is there an eclipse prediction machine, with people checking the readout occasionally?

A lot of what we hear about may not be true! Readers of Shakespeare for example claim it doesn't end until someone quotes 'Arise fair sun and kill the envious moon...'

If out of for AND YOU HAVEN'T filed your taxes or scored eclipse glasses how can you assuage disappointment and surmount malaise? Perhaps if not on strict training for you could follow protocol and buy a pizza. In the shape of the .

Fine points of watching . You are in a group looking at the eclipse. Some people are without the protective glasses. Of course, you let them look through yours. But do you want them back? If so, do you put them on again? Do you wash your hands? What do docs say?

Important questions that may not have been addressed. Of someone stands on your lawn to watch the eclipse what do you say to them? A )Same as always. Get off my lawn!

Lots of people apparently want to be in the Path of Totality. But how many are holding back because it sounds like one of those outfits where they make you turn over all your stuff. Your car. Your kitchen table and even your old baseball glove?

Advice is being given on preparing for . This is for the erudite crowd and those wishing to join. Glance skyward and murmur, with Ovid, 'O lente, lente currite noctis equi!' (Slowly, slowly, horses of the night)Which freely translates to 'C'mon.More of this.'

This was predicted by Shakespeare. In Julius Caesar. Remember when Cassius says 'the fault dear Brutus is not in our stars...' And Brutus quips 'No it is in NEW JERSEY. To be known henceforth as San Andreas East. One trembles to think about it.

Celestial events may not alas be equal opportunity phenomena. Instead there may be astronomical disparities and inequity. Although many sleep by day and many concerts and the tv shows go on after dark, history records not a single solar eclipse in that time period.

Many watched and provided appreciative commentary on Iowa and LSU and Caitlin Clark and the rest But who knows the name of that 24 by 16 rectangle on the backboard above the basket. It's NOT the sweet spot. Actually it HAS no name! Not everything does, even in 2024!

in with the game roughly 3/4 over, what do Iowa and Louisiana have in common? Something non controversial, as befits twitter. Both Hawkeyes and Tigers represent states on the Mississippi River. Lots of states are but not all of them.

Today's mlb game, reminds us of some baseball history. After his tenure in Brooklyn, helping change America by bringing Jackie Robinson to the Dodgers, Branch Rickey became a GM in Pittsburgh! where his teams were awful but he introduced early batting helmets.

here's a story that cites a bit of the history of coyotes in Maryland...one of last two states in continental u.s. for them to populate. In Montgomery since the '80s. washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2024/…

On If I ran things, I'd first insist that we get the score right. Vital in sports. After that, let people write what they want. But we'd insist that the story said 'when the Dukes and Duke duke it out, did anyone put up their dukes?' (JMU is the Dukes)
