It baffles me that in this country we are happy for children to be in poverty, but panic at the very suggestion pensioners - on average one of the wealthiest cohorts - won't get a pay rise greater than earnings.

Yes, there are immensely wealthy pensioners, but few living on the state pension alone will be well off. We have the LOWEST state pension in Europe, by far. The range from poorest to richest pensioner is ENORMOUS.
