Fair winds and following seas my friend Scott Santos. You deserved to enjoy your success as a scientist and your family for decades longer. I toast you and remember our adventures in Panama when we were both just boys looking to take on the world. Aloha Scotty.

- mass bleaching events are increasing in frequency and intensity since 1986

- 31% of the southern “refugia” reefs have been exposed to >4DHW for the first time in over three decades

- high (4-8 DHW) and severe (8-12 DHW) exposure categories are becoming commonplace

“Clim C. deniers accused scientists of exaggerating the threat of global warming. Evidence from Antarctica makes it very clear that scientists did not exaggerate. Probably underrated by considerable degree threat humanity faces.”

Massive coral bleaching in the states of Alagoas and Pernambuco, Brazil. On track to beat the 2019 record of 19 DHW in Southern State of Bahia. 50% of the species that occur in Brazilian reefs are endemic.

The discovery of the oldest pottery ever found in Australia on Jiigurru/Lizard Island off the Queensland coast is challenging the idea that Aboriginal Australian communities were unaware of pottery manufacture before European settlement.

Very clear. Climate inaction means lack of protection of human health and therefore violation of human rights. Landmark decision. ⁦World Health Organization (WHO) theguardian.com/environment/20…

3/ Largely as a result of protest movements has now entered mainstream debate.

And the stakes are clearer than ever.

Following the latest IPCC report in 2022 United Nations Secretary General António Guterres made clear we are faced with a 🚨'Code Red for humanity'

55% of mortalities in the nurseries after the 2019 coral event...so frustrating... We urgently need to reduce our greenhouse gaz emissions to save coral reefs, alone won't be enough. criobe_pf @INEE_CNRS

The South Australian Museum collections provide time-stamped evidence of how species respond to environmental change, truly invaluable to science and society, but will be all tossed away by short-sighted thinking. Shame!

This is a big deal.

Antarctica just experienced the largest jump in temperature ever recorded on Earth. A whopping 38.5 degrees Celsius.

The heat came from Australia!👇🏽 theguardian.com/environment/20…

In 2024 only about 1/4 of reefs are green, unbleached.

Red, severely-bleached reefs in 2016 lost 51% of their corals. Half of that was within a week or two of peak temperatures.

EVERY MASS BLEACHING EVENTS IS ALSO A MASS-MORTALITY EVENT, killing hundreds of millions of corals
