In 2016 we uncovered 421 shoes in one excavation season. This pair were part of that hoard. Wonderful to see them feature along with many other Vindolanda artefacts in the British Museum Legion: life in the Roman Army exhibition.

2nd century tombstone found near Arbeia fort, close to Hadrian’s Wall, dedicated to Regina of the Catuvellauni tribe, the freedwoman wife of Barates of Palmyra. The epitaph is written in Latin & beneath it a lament in Palmyrene Aramaic script.

Great to see the only known surviving example of a Roman legionary scutum, on display in London. Made of wood with painted rawhide depicting an eagle with a laurel wreath, winged Victories & a lion, excavated from Dura-Europos in the 1930’s.

This week we’re looking at children and childhood in the ancient and medieval world. We start today by looking at objects that were children’s toys, specifically a doll. Here we see an example of a bone doll from the Early Islamic period coming from the site of Fustat in Egypt.

😍 Check out the cover of vol. 6!

Featuring Diocletian's Palace from Split & the design skills of Dr Francesca Mazzilli, we particularly love this one.

Our first articles are already published, with much more on the way!
