Lots of shoes have been found at Roman Vindolanda but it is rare to find a pair. These remarkably well preserved leather shoes belonged to a young child, the equivalent size of a modern UK children’s size 11. Currently on display at the #LegionExhibition #FindsFriday
Looking forward to 'Re-Thinking Roman Daily Life: A Workshop' at Institute of Classical Studies (ICS) & contributing to the Oxford Handbook of Daily Life in the Roman World. Come along to join us.
Thank you to the editors Kate Cooper and Dr Hannah Platts, FRSA 💙💛 for the invite.

In 2016 we uncovered 421 shoes in one excavation season. This pair were part of that hoard. Wonderful to see them feature along with many other Vindolanda artefacts in the British Museum Legion: life in the Roman Army exhibition.

2nd century tombstone found near Arbeia fort, close to Hadrian’s Wall, dedicated to Regina of the Catuvellauni tribe, the freedwoman wife of Barates of Palmyra. The epitaph is written in Latin & beneath it a lament in Palmyrene Aramaic script. #EpigraphyTuesday

Great to see the only known surviving example of a Roman legionary scutum, on display in London. Made of wood with painted rawhide depicting an eagle with a laurel wreath, winged Victories & a lion, excavated from Dura-Europos in the 1930’s.

Another hard copy this week -- this time a paperback edition of this edited volume on housing. Still grateful to my department School of Historical Studies, Birkbeck (of blessed memory, pre-restructure) for supporting the 'Between Words and Walls' conference that led to this!
