Last week, the Better Budget Alliance delivered ~550 messages from Boston residents + a letter signed by 44 prominent leaders across multiple sectors, asking the mayor to dedicate $40M to participatory budgeting. ->

Imagine what the $50 million police increase could create if it was redirected to community-led solutions like participatory budgeting, alternative mental health crisis response, youth jobs & housing stabilization. ->

This budget allocation demonstrates that investing in resident democracy is not a priority for Mayor Wu, while she continues to increase funding for police. ->

Since community-based groups successfully mandated participatory budgeting on the ballot in 2021, it has been a grassroots movement led by ordinary Bostonians. The mayor is severely underestimating its significance, especially to working class communities of color. ->

In fact, the mayor is dedicating even less to participatory budgeting in her proposed FY25 budget than in prior years, despite an overall increase in the operating budget & a promise to grow this allocation. ->
