Walked in from t'boozer at exactly the moment Hans fell from Nakatomi Plaza like I'm some sort of Chr*stm*s god (that hates Chr*stm*s but loves self-aware big budget action movies)

Weird phrasing here, but Historic England appear to be spouting myths.

This is a dovecote of c1400 that was resited as a domestic house c1600. It was called The 3 Pigeons in the 1750s and Fighting Cocks by 1807. The ludicrous claim to antiquity was invented in the 1890s.

Whilst out for a beer this festive season try not to fall for the ludicrously ancient dates painted on pub signs. Here's some thoughts on how to spot genuinely ancient inns...

Temporary fix until we can get a roofer in to sort it properly. Fingers crossed this will hold over the holidays...

A selection of the places that I photographed in 2023 for inclusion in the Historic Building Mythbusting book.

These include Stone Priory (Staffordshire), West Mine at Alderley Edge (Cheshire), Warkworth Castle (Northumberland), and Henry Tudor House at Shrewsbury (Shropshire).

...and *bang* - a bunch of Historic Building Mythbusting book tour dates have come together. New events pencilled in for Pevensey, Oxford, London, Guildford & Enfield.

Looking a bit SE focused though, so I'm interested in dates for the rest of the country. Can anyone help?

Yesterday's post about the overtly militaristic presentation of castles has thrown up a few queries. Yes, castles were once thought of as primarily defensive forts. Yet the last 40-50 years of research has emphasised much greater complexity. More here...

Four of the structures I've surveyed the buildings archaeology of during 2023: Maxstoke (Warks), Fen Ditton (Cambs), Whitby (N Yorks) & Sible Hedingham (Essex).

Looking forward to getting on site in January for new projects in Monmouthshire and Northamptonshire 🙂🏠📸

Just sat through an entire Castle Studies Group Group online talk about the problems of overt militarism / mediaevalism in the heritage presentation of castles full well in the knowledge that my Tiny Son's toys (all acquired from castle gift shops) were on the sofa next to us...

Not content with the challenge of babbling on for a total of twelve hours, I've also opted to debut two brand new talks at the next One Man Conference (on mediaeval houses & mediaeval villages)...

Turns out you can claim just about anything by writing it on the side of something... and lots of folk will uncritically believe it. Works as well for pubs or buses.
