Born on this day (September 7) just a few years apart: Jazz saxophonist Sonny Rollins (1930) and rockabilly guitarist/songwriter Buddy Holly (1936). Holly died in a plane crash in 1959. Rollins is still alive (but retired) at 93.

Artist Virgil Finlay, born July 23, 1914. Finlay specialized in sci-fi, fantasy and horror illustration for pulp magazines from the 1930s to the ‘50s. He’s best known for pen-and-ink drawings that illustrated interior pages.
